Performance improvements for bFS Carton, Ross W.
Abstract
The traditional file system was designed on the premise that it would be deployed within a trusted and restricted administrative domain, i.e. the domain was restricted to a set of users managed by a trusted system administrator. The Internet is neither trusted nor restricted, so a file system to be deployed on the Internet challenges the traditional file system model. bFS [8] is a file system model and implementation that addresses the challenges raised by deploying a file system on the Internet. These challenges are very real, as Internet-based storage providers become more prevalent. The original bFS implementation was a completely functional prototype, however it suffered from very poor performance. This thesis describes an improved implementation, and shows that its performance now compares favourably to plain unencrypted NFS.

The traditional file system was designed on the premise that it would be

was restricted to a set of users managed by a trusted system administrator.
The Internet is neither trusted nor restricted, so a file system to be deployed
on the Internet challenges the traditional file system model. bFS [8] is a file system
model and implementation that addresses the challenges raised by deploying a file
system on the Internet. These challenges are very real, as Internet-based storage

The original bFS implementation was a completely functional prototype,
however it suffered from very poor performance. This thesis describes an improved
implementation, and shows that its performance now compares favourably to plain
unencrypted NFS.
