Please note that starting Tuesday, October 13th we will be making a number of modifications to integrate cIRcle into the new UBC Library Open Collections service. This may result in some temporary outages next week. Please keep this in mind when planning your work schedule. Apologies for any inconvenience.

From 2003-2009, the NEXUS Research Unit, based at the University of British Columbia and provincially funded by the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research (MSFHR), conducted leading, multidisciplinary research into the social contexts of health behaviour. Under the leadership of NEXUS co-directors Drs. Joan Bottorff, Joy Johnson, and Pamela Ratner, the unit operated with a mandate to critically analyze the social contexts that create barriers to health, affect health seeking, and influence system responses through the lenses of gender, diversity, and place. NEXUS closed in 2009 when provincial budget cuts resulted in the discontinuance of the MSFHR research unit infrastructure program which had funded NEXUS since its inception. In its short six-year lifetime NEXUS was exceptionally productive and successful, having developed internationally reputed programs of research in the areas of tobacco and substance use, youth sexual health, rural and remote health, heart health, women's and men's health, and cancer, and supported the research training of over 70 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.

At the time of its closing, the investigators of NEXUS represented over a dozen disciplinary perspectives spanning the health and social sciences and humanities. In addition to the three co-directors, the unit was comprised of nine lead investigators, and 21 co-investigators representing a diverse group of researchers, policy and program experts, and health care service providers and clinicians.

The purpose of this archive is to preserve some of the key programming developed by NEXUS in this time as a resource both for investigators and students working in the field, and for researchers developing multidisciplinary health research infrastructure. This archive is by no means comprehensive; rather, it provides a sampling of materials related to the many research, training, and knowledge exchange activities undertaken by NEXUS.

A selection of NEXUS published works can also be viewed in PubMed.
