Schoolyard revealed McNiven, Lisa

Abstract

Schoolyards in North America are isolated from their neighbourhood contexts . This isolation deprives school children of the many opportunities found in the local landscape and in the relationships with people in the surrounding community. Schoolyards have been, until most recently, overlooked as cultural resources for the communities they serve. Little attention has been given to their design nor their purpose other than the containment of children and their engagement in gross motor activities. This paper describes the different ways that a schoolyard could be used while offering to school children opportunities for exploration, creative thinking and experiential learning. To explore the cultural importance of this public space, social and cultural programs are integrated within the schoolyard design.
