The effect of twist on flexible hydrofoils Milne, John Gordon

Abstract

Flexible low aspect ratio hydrofoils were tested to investigate the effect of twist on the lift and drag characteristics and in particular, the high induced drag force. Flexible models with stiffeners at various positions and rigid models with a set twist were tested in a water flume and the lift and drag forces were measured over a range of angles of attack. It was confirmed that twisting can be used as an alternative to tapering to produce elliptic loading. Twisting of tapered wings was shown to be beneficial in the cases tested and the benefits are in contradiction to the simple theory of elliptic loading. It was found that twisting is more beneficial than the simple theory shows and that the twisted wing is less sensitive to changes in angle of attack.
