The search for intermodulation coupling in the ground Mitchell, Gerald George

Abstract

The assumption that the ground behaves as a linear electrical network is tested with a field experiment. Two sinusoids of current are transmitted into the ground simultaneously. The potential field is measured and recorded on magnetic tape. Amplitude spectra are computed and searched for intermodulation coupling terms, the presence of which indicate nonlinearity. Tests on the UBC campus did not detect intermodulation coupling. The first test, at a volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit, indicated significent intermodulation coupling. This test was repeated with a different instrument-electrode configuration. There was no coupling detected in the repeated test.
