Historical perspective : an analysis and application in education

Scholars interested in historical perspective (perhaps using different terminology) stress its importance for various reasons. Only Erik Erikson, however, has systematically described historical perspective and its development in the individual. The thesis begins with a review of the literature, continues with a definition of historical perspective and an explanation of its considerable importance both historically and vis a vis the developmental theories of Erik Erikson and Jean Piaget. The education system arguably offers the best locus and means for developing young people's historical perspective. High school history presents a particularly suitable vehicle. Here, the methods of conceptual analysis and of justification may link up to the development of historical perspective. A survey of the literature and an exploration of the educational application of these activities, particularly in high school history courses, conclude the discussion.
