Interaction of CO2 laser light with a dense Z-pinch plasma Albrecht, Georg F.

Abstract

The interaction of a 250 MW CO₂ laser pulse with a Z-pinch plasma has been observed. Heating by inverse bremsstrahlung and stimulated Brilloum scattering off a plasma with a few times 10¹⁷ electrons/cm³, T[sub e] ~ 150 eV and temperature scale lengths of a few mm is shown to occur. The observed angular dependence of the Brillouin backscattered light is in good agreement with current theories. Some of the backscattered light shows intensity modulations at the electron gyro frequency. Finally, the successful nano second gating of an Optical Multichannel Analyser is described and applied to spectroscopical density measurements of the plasma.
