Systems and Self: Understanding the Posthuman in Beautiful Losers Benade, Richard

Abstract

Leonard Cohen's novel, Beautiful Losers, provides insight into the changing relationship between humanity and the technology within which it is situated. With both anxiety and desire, Cohen demonstrates how it becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish what is human from what is machine. The resulting ambiguity echoes the later sentiments of the posthuman era. Beautiful Losers, then, offers an unprecedented opportunity to explore the theories of individuals such as Katherine Hayles, Donna Haraway, and Jean Baudrillard who chart the blurring lines between human and machine.
