Passenger distribution functions for small airports Geddes, Erica

Abstract

This research looks at one input required for the design and planning of small airports. It investigates the number of passengers expected to use the terminal. Data describing passenger volumes was gathered from airline flight records at eight airports in British Columbia. The volumes were formed into frequency distributions and a theoretical model was found that would best describe the data. The selection of the model was based on the overall fit of the curve (as measured by the Chi-Squared statistic and by visual inspection) and the ability of the model to predict the right hand tail of the observed curve (as measured by the 90th percentile values). Three model distributions were studied: the Normal, the Poisson and the Lognormal. According to the selection criteria, the lognormal distribution was found to be the best model for use in air terminal design.
