The school primers and the political culture of British Columbia, 1880-1980 Ahsan, Syed Aziz-Al
Abstract
The school primers used in British Columbia between 1880 and 1980 are used to measure the evolution of the province's political culture. The research method used is content analysis. Three hypotheses are tested: 1) B.C. primers will picture an increasingly egalitarian society; 2) B.C. primers will picture an increasing tolerance of ethnic diversity; 3) B.C. primers will picture an increasingly secular society. The hypotheses concerning secularization and ethnic diversity are supported. The hypothesis concerning egalitarianism is supported only partially. The limitations and advantages of the indicators used in the content analysis are stressed in the conclusion. The indicators used to measure egalitarianism appear to be the weakest of those used in this study.
