Air chamber design charts. Galatiuk, William Robert

Abstract

The air chamber has certain advantages over both the open-top surge tank and the valve-type surge suppressor for controlling pressure surges in pump-discharge lines. The main purpose of this study was to produce charts which can be used for designing or checking the size of an air chamber required for a particular pumping installation. The characteristics method was used to convert the two partial differential equations of momentum and continuity into four total differential equations. The solution of the equations (finite-difference form) was carried through by digital computer to provide the data required for the preparation of the charts. Results obtained on the digital computer by the method of characteristics are checked by the graphical method. Examples demonstrating the use of the charts are included.
