Abstract: The purpose of this investigation was the determination of the nature of certain imperfections in magnesium oxide crystals. Optical absorption and photoconductivity spectra of specimens cleaved from a number of larger pieces were measured. The effects of vacuum heating, of non-stoichiometry and of ultraviolet and X-ray irradiation were investigated. The nature of the imperfections could not be inferred from the experimental results but an energy level diagram consistent with all the data has been deduced. A comparison of the present work with pertinent data from the literature is presented and a basic error in previous photoconductivity measurements is pointed out. A method for the determination of the sign of the charge carriers excited during photoconductivity measurements is described.
