Abstract
The isothermal decomposition of austenite in the bainite region has been examined. The progress of the transformation in several hypoeutectoid and eutectoid steels was investigated metallographically from a qualitative point of view. A survey was made of the information available on the initiation, course, and end product of the transformation. The factors entering into the transformation were examined separately, their temperature-dependence and interactions investigated. A theory of the decomposition of austenite was proposed, and this theory examined in the light of the phenomena associated with the isothermal and anisothermal progress of the transformation.
