[Here's a photo from 1949 taken at a skating party at Keloka Orchards in East Kelowna. On the right is Darby Hayes, 34, my father. He was the general manager of both Keloka Orchards Ltd. and the Occidental Fruit Co. Ltd. In the centre is Dick Benmore, accountant for Occidental Fruit and best man at my Dad's wedding. On the left is Wan Quong, owner of the City Park Cafe mentioned in the paragraph above. As a child, I was often at the cafe with my parents after hockey games, for example. Quong's idea of a hamburger was a lump of ground beef and a slice of dill pickle between two slices of white bread. I don't ever remember getting it in a bun. From Kelowna Public Archives: "Wan Quong was the owner of the City Park Cafe on Abbott Street in Kelowna. The family business was started by Tape Quong in the early 1930s, passed to Jim Quong after his father's death in 1938. Jim passed the Cafe onto Wan Quong when Jim returned to China. On January 11, 1954, the City Park Cafe shut its doors to the public and has since been torn down. The City Park Cafe, better known as "Quong's," had been a well-known restaurant in Kelowna for about 30 years. Noted for its excellent steaks, it was a favourite eating place after a local dance or party." It was a casual place. I was an avid coin collector at the age of 8 or 9, and I remember Wan letting me go through the change in the cash register while my parents were eating.
