Family activiy baggies : linking play and literacy at home Hartley, L. D.
Abstract
Framed by socio-cultural theory and third space theory, this paper examines the role of play in the literacy lives of Kindergarten-aged children. First, the definitions of both play and literacy are examined. Next, a review of literature examines the role of play on young children's development of literacy at home and at school. Knowing that student success is impacted by the home environment, the literature review also examines the role of parents on the literacy development of their children. Finally, the paper suggests implementing a play-based literacy program at school as a means of supporting parents as they enhance their child's literacy development at home.
