How might student gender influence book choices a teacher makes : a study of reading motivation in middle school children Fast, Sarah J.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore the ways that gender might impact reading choices of a mixed gender group of grade 7 students and how such choices might inform language arts instruction. A survey of reading preferences was given to all grade 7 students enrolled. This survey consisted of Likert scale and open response questions that helped to determine which novels students would like to read, which novels they have already read, and their general feelings towards reading. The data was examined for trends within book choices and between genders. It was concluded, based on the responses on the surveys, that students are motivated by story elements and genre and a student's gender and a character's gender has less impact on a student's reading choice.
