Grade one word recognition : a multimodal approach Cozens, Meghan Beth

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to apply what I have learned in studying the benefits of integrating the arts into a literacy unit plan for primary students. The unit I developed uses a multimodal approach to teach students to recognize high frequency words that they encounter in songs introduced each week as part of their Language Arts curriculum. Fine Arts activities are integrated into the daily schedule in manageable and authentic ways. The high frequency words are used to create art work, drama and movement. The song is then reviewed each day in new and engaging ways. By the end of the week the students are familiar with the new words so they can read and incorporate them into their literacy activities. After implementing the unit in my own classroom, I could see the positive reaction the students had to the Fine Arts activities. All students, even those of lower abilities, were excited and engaged and seemed to be able to recognize the target words more easily.
