35 years of urban climate research at the 'Vancouver-Sunset' flux tower Christen, Andreas; Oke, Tim; Grimmond, Sue; Steyn, Douw; Roth, Matthias
Abstract
The ‘Sunset’ neighborhood in Vancouver, BC, Canada is one of the most extensively studied areas in urban climatology due to more than thirty years of research at the University of British Columbia’s micrometeorological tower. This contribution provides a brief history of this unique urban research tower, and shows how selected developments in urban climatology were linked to work at this site. The contribution highlights some of the past and ongoing research activities on the urban energy balance, on turbulence, and urban trace-gas flux measurements.
