Diagnostic and screening programs for fetal anomalies and genetic disease: how should we evaluate them? Baird, Patricia A.
Abstract
I was asked to talk about evaluating diagnostic and screening programs for fetal anomalies; I'm going to take this to include genetic diseases as well, as they are so closely related. I am going to talk about programs that are aimed at detecting prenatally whether the fetus has a genetic disease or a physical anomaly. I am not going to address newborn or other screening. I will tell you what we have learned from Commission research about how prenatal programs are currently used in Canada, talk about developments on the horizon, and mention some of the issues raised by such programs. I will conclude my talk by describing the usual approach to evaluating prenatal diagnostic and screening programs, pointing out some of the detrimental effects of this approach, and outlining an alternative.
