Experiments were undertaken to examine the influence of fine grain inputs to a sediment bed with a mobile surface. Videos, which are provided in this supplementary data set, enabled us to produce phenomenological descriptions of grain sorting (both kinetic sieving and spontaneous percolation), along with diagnosis of the critical processes controlling the overall bed response.
