Historic mine sites project : British Columbia Ministry of Energy and Mines Stewart, Gregg G. (Gregg Gordon), 1961-; Barazzuol, Lisa N.

Abstract

The Ministry of Energy and Mines initiated the Historic Mine Sites Project in 2000. The purpose of this project was to start an inventory of historic mine sites to better understand if these sites represent environmental or public health and safety liabilities in British Columbia, and to develop a Historic Mine Sites database. Field based inspections were conducted across the province in the summer of 2000. To date, 62 sites have been inspected which included sampling of mine drainage for analysis of heavy metal content as well as documentation of other site specific information. Many other provinces across Canada are undertaking similar studies including Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia. This paper provides an overview of this project. Full project details and results are published in Ministry of Energy and Mines Open File 2003-03.
