What is Open Access Week?
Open Access Week is an international event that highlights how open scholarship can help people meet their goals in research, scholarly publishing, teaching and learning. Each year, as part of Open Access Week, UBC showcases diverse events highlighting areas of open scholarship involving UBC’s faculty, students and staff, as well as guests from the local and global community. All of these events are FREE and open to the public, students, faculty, staff and schools. Beyond a single week, events are held online throughout October and November to provide multiple, flexible opportunities for engagement.
Why should I attend an Open Access Week event?
Open Scholarship is “a broad term that has emerged in response to a need to identify and speak to a growing number of open practices within academia. Open Access, Open Science, Open Data, and Open Education make up a sprawling landscape of interconnected approaches to and focuses on ‘openness.’ With roots in democracy, equality, and social justice, all areas of Open Scholarship operate under the assumption that knowledge creation and dissemination should be understood as social practices” (What is Open Scholarship? POSE). This year’s theme ‘Community over Commercialization’ invites participants to “join together, take action, and raise awareness around the importance of community control of knowledge-sharing systems”. If you have wanted to learn more about Open Scholarship tools and concepts, this series of events is for you!
Where can I learn about Open Access and cIRcle?
Register for Making Research Open: An Introduction to cIRcle, UBC’s Institutional Repository on Tuesday, November 7, 2023 at 1:00pm via Zoom for an overview of what you need to know to get started with cIRcle. If you write books or articles, have a Tri-Agency grant, lead a research lab, organize or present at conferences, teach exceptional students, and more, cIRcle may be the solution to sustainable open sharing you’ve been looking for.
Can’t make it to the session? Read our Introduction to cIRcle blog post, consult our Submissions page, or contact us!
