March 8th is International Women’s Day, a global holiday which honors the women’s rights movement and celebrates women’s achievements around the globe. This year’s theme centers around the phrase “Accelerate action” which calls upon the need to take quick and decisive steps towards gender equality.
This particular International Women’s Day is also the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, where leaders from 189 countries came together in 1995 to create a global agenda for the rights of women and girls. Now that we are in 2025, how can we continue to push women’s rights on a global scale? One of the ways we can help is by making research on topics concerning women’s rights open and accessible.
A good example of this is cIRcle’s collection from the Institute for Gender, Race, Sexuality, and Social Justice, which helps push research on gender equality forward by showing the multifaceted experiences that women face globally. For example, Adeerya Johnson’s article Dirty South Feminism: The Girlies Got Somethin’ to Say Too! Southern Hip-Hop Women, Fighting Respectability, Talking Mess, and Twerking Up the Dirty South talks about black women’s important roles within the southern hip-hop scene.
Mayuri Sengupta and Leila Harris’s article Interrogating differences: intersectionality and participatory livelihood development in the upland forest of Tripura (Northeast India) focuses on how tribal women from the Purati minority deal with differences and power in a participatory livelihood project in upland Tripura.
