From 2011 onward, UBC has hosted the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) academic competition. Interestingly, UBC was the first North American university to do so after 3MT was founded a decade ago by the University of Queensland.

Now with over 350 universities participating in 59 countries, this competition helps current graduate students hone their presentation and communication skills while they explain the “breadth and significance of their research project to a non-specialist audience”.

One 3MT First Place and People’s Choice Winner said, “This is important because it teaches you to reconceptualise your own work and see it through the eyes of others. By asking yourself ‘why does my research matter and why should anyone care about it?’, you will think of new and creative ways of understanding and communicating your work.” Continue reading this recent 3MT testimonial by Craig Jones (Geography) here
