Celebrating Black History Month
Every day is an opportunity to learn about and celebrate Black history and excellence in Canada and beyond. In North America, February is recognized as Black History Month, a time of particular focus to tell, listen to, and share stories about Black legacies and leadership, experiences, and communities.
The following highlights invite you to make UBC research in cIRcle a part of this period of reflection and attention.
Movements, Music, and Migrations
Photographing the Black Lives Matter Movement features an interview with photographer Sheila Pree Bright by UBC History professor Tara Meyer. In this 11 minute recording, Bright discussed, “[…] her work documenting the Black Lives Matter movement and the importance of capturing a fuller spectrum of experiences and emotions than those presented in the media.”
Anna Blackmore’s MA thesis, The Blues : intersections between Black art forms and post-emancipation American literature, aims to “spark interest in the origins of Jazz and Blues music”. In this work, Blackmore analyzes literary forms for insight into the cultivation of Black art forms following the Great Migration, the “movement of six million Black people from the Southern to Northern United States during the period of Reconstruction.”
Majda Mohamed’s 2023 Master of Advanced Studies in Architecture thesis examines “the lived experience of Black-owned businesses in Vancouver” and the opportunities afforded by “a series of reconciliations for marginalized communities” planned for the city: Reconstructing Vancouver’s black community from the history of invisibility : analysis of the role of black entrepreneurship in British Columbia, Canada.
