The Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) 1 is “a joint Canada-US-Mexico initiative that seeks to bring together people from a wide range of mathematical, scientific and industry backgrounds and to create a forum for the exchange of knowledge and methods between these specialists”.
The future home of the newest BIRS-affiliated mathematics research centre, Casa Matemática Oaxaca (CMO)2, will be situated at a UNESCO designated World Heritage3 site in Oaxaca, Mexico. While awaiting the construction of its new home, CMO is currently operating out of the Hotel Hacienda Los Laureles and Hotel Angel Inn in Oaxaca.
As noted by Brent Kearney, Technology Manager for BIRS, it is great to know that the ‘BIRS review committees selected 21 additional workshops from the pool of BIRS proposals to take place at the CMO’. Generally, videos recorded with the BIRS automated lecture recording system4 are streamed live and then automatically uploaded about 10 minutes after the lecture concludes. Like the rest of UBC’s scholarly research in cIRcle, the videos are free to view and download for educational purposes.
Now that the Banff & Oaxacan videos have been identified via the “Geographic Location” & “Series” item metadata fields, it is easy to distinguish between them as seen in this BIRS example at: http://hdl.handle.net/2429/57108. Here, the “Geographic Location” field is seen listed as “Oaxaca (Mexico : State”) and the “Series” field is seen listed as “BIRS Workshop Lecture Videos (Oaxaca (Mexico : State))”.
So, with BIRS video lectures spanning across “all areas of the mathematical, computational and statistical sciences from pure and applied mathematics, theoretical and applied computer science, statistics, and mathematical physics, to financial and industrial mathematics, as well as the mathematics of information technology, climate science, mathematical biology and medical science”, there is a whole lot to explore. Enjoy!
